STIC Twenty Fourteen Event 6

The STIC 2014 series concludes with two more thought-provoking, curiosity-stirring TED Talks video screenings! ... Our sixth event opens with cabaret-rocker, performance artist, connection-age street economist Amanda Palmer. ... Astronomer, cyberhacker-catcher, Klein bottle-maker extraordinaire and education contrarian Clifford Stoll concludes our playlist! ... Doors open 5:30, program starts 6:30. Hope to see you there then!

Amanda Palmer, "The art of asking" (TED 2013)
Can 7 billion drowning men and women save each other? If so, it's going to take a whole lot of connection and empathy, suggests Mr. Palmer! She offers some hard-earned life lessons for for consideration about trust and reciprocity in this surprising talk.

Clifford Stoll, "The call to learn" (TED 2006)

TED.com once labeled this talk "A conversation with an agile mind." (Good description!) This extra-energetic, seemingly discursive talk might meaningfully tagged a lot of things--including "the art and power of mentoring." Guess what--fostering curiosity helps! And building real relationships!

STIC Twenty Fourteen Event 5

The fifth of six Art Outreach Gallery STIC 2014 events features riveting video talks from Thomas Barnett & David Brooks. ... You know the space, the time is 6:30 PM, Thursday, November 6. (Gallery doors open 5:30.) Please join us!

Dr. Thomas PM Barnett, "Let's rethink America's milatary strategy"
America has an awesome Leviathon force--what we need is an awesome system administrator force to go with it. That's what ace geo-strategist Dr. Thomas PM Barnett has been telling global leaders for years. To understand what that means and why Barnett says it's important to know, check out this TED2005 talk.

Here's a link to Dr. Barnett's books. Here's a sample read from the preface of his still prescient 2004 work The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century. Here's a video playlist to help understand the rule sets of the emerging global world order (or, disorder, as the case may be!). And here's some "about Thomas P. M. Barnett" background information, including helpful links about Wikistrat. (NOTE: Wikistrat bills itself as the world's first crowd-sourced global affairs consultancy service. Barnett currently serves as its chief analyst.)

David Brooks, "The social animal"

In case anyone had any doubts, yes, the title of David Brooks engaging TED2011 talk refers to HUMANS. The best-selling author, New York Times columnist and self-described comic sociologist explores, among other things, such modern phenomena as the truly amazing social skills of today's political class--and why they can't seem seem to channel those amazing social skills into formulating effective public policy. (Brooks suggests it may have something to do with the fact that our politicos often leave out that all-important human relationship factor in their public policy formulations. (Though he seems as baffled as the rest of us as to why that is so!))

Read Mr. Brooks' opinion columns here. Check out his books here. View videos from a quick-and-dirty David Brooks "channel" here.

"Babies and young children are like the research and development division of the human species," says cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik. Join us for Ms. Gopnik's fascinating talk from TED Global 2011, "What do babies think?"--and see why she believes early childhood is a time for learning to learn.

The "visionary for the rest of us," Steve Jobs is one of the very few who really need no introduction. (Talk about living a purpose-driven life!) Listen to what he had to say in his heartfelt 2005 Stanford University commencement address, "How to live before you die."
