STIC Twenty Fourteen Event 6

The STIC 2014 series concludes with two more thought-provoking, curiosity-stirring TED Talks video screenings! ... Our sixth event opens with cabaret-rocker, performance artist, connection-age street economist Amanda Palmer. ... Astronomer, cyberhacker-catcher, Klein bottle-maker extraordinaire and education contrarian Clifford Stoll concludes our playlist! ... Doors open 5:30, program starts 6:30. Hope to see you there then!

Amanda Palmer, "The art of asking" (TED 2013)
Can 7 billion drowning men and women save each other? If so, it's going to take a whole lot of connection and empathy, suggests Mr. Palmer! She offers some hard-earned life lessons for for consideration about trust and reciprocity in this surprising talk.

Clifford Stoll, "The call to learn" (TED 2006)

TED.com once labeled this talk "A conversation with an agile mind." (Good description!) This extra-energetic, seemingly discursive talk might meaningfully tagged a lot of things--including "the art and power of mentoring." Guess what--fostering curiosity helps! And building real relationships!

STIC Twenty Fourteen Event 5

The fifth of six Art Outreach Gallery STIC 2014 events features riveting video talks from Thomas Barnett & David Brooks. ... You know the space, the time is 6:30 PM, Thursday, November 6. (Gallery doors open 5:30.) Please join us!

Dr. Thomas PM Barnett, "Let's rethink America's milatary strategy"
America has an awesome Leviathon force--what we need is an awesome system administrator force to go with it. That's what ace geo-strategist Dr. Thomas PM Barnett has been telling global leaders for years. To understand what that means and why Barnett says it's important to know, check out this TED2005 talk.

Here's a link to Dr. Barnett's books. Here's a sample read from the preface of his still prescient 2004 work The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century. Here's a video playlist to help understand the rule sets of the emerging global world order (or, disorder, as the case may be!). And here's some "about Thomas P. M. Barnett" background information, including helpful links about Wikistrat. (NOTE: Wikistrat bills itself as the world's first crowd-sourced global affairs consultancy service. Barnett currently serves as its chief analyst.)

David Brooks, "The social animal"

In case anyone had any doubts, yes, the title of David Brooks engaging TED2011 talk refers to HUMANS. The best-selling author, New York Times columnist and self-described comic sociologist explores, among other things, such modern phenomena as the truly amazing social skills of today's political class--and why they can't seem seem to channel those amazing social skills into formulating effective public policy. (Brooks suggests it may have something to do with the fact that our politicos often leave out that all-important human relationship factor in their public policy formulations. (Though he seems as baffled as the rest of us as to why that is so!))

Read Mr. Brooks' opinion columns here. Check out his books here. View videos from a quick-and-dirty David Brooks "channel" here.

As for the IDEAS at Event 4 of our STIC 2014 series, please read on!

"Babies and young children are like the research and development division of the human species," says cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik. Join us for Ms. Gopnik's fascinating talk from TED Global 2011, "What do babies think?"--and see why she believes early childhood is a time for learning to learn.

The "visionary for the rest of us," Steve Jobs is one of the very few who really need no introduction. (Talk about living a purpose-driven life!) Listen to what he had to say in his heartfelt 2005 Stanford University commencement address, "How to live before you die."

STIC Twenty Fourteen Event Three

The third of six Art Outreach Gallery STIC 2014 events is Thursday, October 2. ... Gallery doors open 5:30, showtime is 6:30. ... Hope to see you THERE THEN!

We time-warp back a decade or so for the next two videos from the TED Talk archives!

First up is a 2004 "talk" by best-selling author (and ace explainer!), Malcolm Gladwell. In "Choice, happiness and spaghetti sauce," Mr. Gladwell expounds on the work of one of his personal heroes: the food scientist, consumer behaviorist and world-class happiness-maker, Howard Moskowitz.

Our second featured video is from TED 2005 by the ever-prescient, social media prober, Clay Shirky. In "institution vs. collaboration," Mr. Shirky looks at how new communications technologies disrupt traditional ways individuals, groups and societies do things--as well as how new media enable novel ways to get things done.

The law office of Heller, Maas, Moro & Magill is pleased to sponsor STIC 2014 Event 3.

STIC Twenty Fourteen, Event Two

The next (second of six) STIC 2014 event is Thursday, September 18. Join in!

Deception--and trust-building--is the subject of social media expert Pamela Meyer's 2011 TED Talk. Watch this insightful video with friends--and, if Ms. Meyer is right, fellow liars!--at the Art Outreach Gallery STIC 2014, Event Two. ... Remember, STIC meet-ups are always free. (Honest!) And everyone's always welcome. (Well, uh, er, perhaps, it'd be better if some of our obnoxious, close-minded, bigoted acquaintances just watched these videos elsewhere!)

Internet marketing seer/Connection Age sage Seth Godin's 2009 TED talk about connecting people and ideas still seems prescient! And gives several inspiring examples of how committed individuals led positive impactful movements. One not-so secret leadership secret: don't try to win people over to your cause; rather recognize, reach out to, organize and empower those that already share your passion.

Preview, review and/or re-review these two videos at www.ted.com. And as Seth likes to remind us: we learn better when we learn TOGETHER! (Please join in!)

STIC Event Two is sponsored by heating & cooling contractor, Wm. Kramer & Sons, Inc.

STIC Twenty Fourteen, Event One

The first of six STIC 2014 events will be held Thursday, September 4.

Each event features two screenings the TED Talks video library. The 2014 STIC (for "Space Time Ideas Community") season kicks off with Ken Robinson's 2006 talk about how students "grow out of creativity." (Short explanation: schools stigmatise being wrong. Sir Ken contends that when we lose the capacity to risk making mistakes, we lose the capacity for originality.) Join us and see why this engaging talk is TED.com's all-time most popular!

In the second video talk, game designer and Institute For The Future researcher, Jane McGonigal, maintains that the skill sets hardcore gamers acquire are exactly the skill sets necessary to ... SAVE THE WORLD! (Seriously!--and if skeptical, please hold judgment until you watch this fascinating talk!)

And remember, you can preview, review and re-review these two videos at www.ted.com. (As well as watch 24/7 on demand over 1700 other TED Talks.)

STIC Event One is sponsored by Macali's Giant Eagle

The STIC 2014 Season Sponsor is Jensen Lock & Alarm.

STIC 2014!

The Art Outreach Gallery is pleased to announce we will be hosting a second, six-event, idea-spreading series that we call STIC (for Space, Time, Ideas, Community). The free and open to the public STIC 2014 meet-ups will be held at our Eastwood Mall storefront on the first & third Thursdays of September, October & November (9/4, 9/18. 10/2, 10/16, 11/6 and 11/20). Gallery doors open 5:30; showtime 6:30.

Each STIC event features two screenings from the TED Talks video archives. Ten of the twelve STIC 2014 videos (do the math!) are repeats from our 2011 video playlist. Like so many of the remarkable ~18 minute TED Talks, we think they're well worth another view. ((Though we hope to gather some audience suggestions for future selections. (Please chime in!)))
